What is testosterone?

Testosterone is the male sex hormone. Hormones are substances with a specific effect on organs and tissues. They activate or inhibit activities in the body and a very small amount is already effective. Hormones are transported through the blood and broken down in the liver. They regulate your growth, metabolism, behaviour and your character.

Testosterone is a so-called steroid hormone. Steroids are fats with four carbon ring structures. Because of these fats, testosterone is not soluble in water. Testosterone is produced in the adrenal glands and by the gonads of both men and women. In men it provides sexual characteristics such as a low voice, hair, muscle building, more strength and a greater density of the bones. In women, testosterone concentrations are much lower than in men, who produce about 7 mg of it per day.

How does testosterone work?

When testosterone is released into the blood by the adrenal glands and gonads, about 95% of it is bound to proteins in the blood plasma: albumin and globulin. As a result, they become soluble and can be transported through the blood. The testosterone that is not bound to blood proteins is called free testosterone. The greater the binding capacity of your blood proteins, the lower the level of free testosterone in your body. Substances such as anabolic steroids (an artificial form of testosterone made in the laboratory) cause the blood proteins to bind less testosterone, so that more free testosterone is present in your blood.

Testosterone and strength training

Testosterone increases the production of muscle proteins and thus your lean body mass.
Testosterone increases your basic resting metabolism: the amount of energy you consume at rest. This is useful for dry training: even if you do nothing, you will burn more energy.
You consume less of the glycogen in your muscles during training.

To increase the amount of free testosterone in your body, you can do three things:

Use anabolic steroids. We do not recommend this. If you do want to do this, let yourself be well informed by people who really know about it.
Boost your body’s natural testosterone production.
Use testosterone boosters.

Work out hard! Do a lot of high intensity exercises, which results in more testosterone production. Use more weight and do less repetition.
(Excess) fat reduces testosterone production.
Enough sleep. Too little sleep causes fat storage in your body.
Drink little or no alcohol.
Provide little stress: under stress you produce a lot of the hormone cortisol that blocks testosterone.
Limit your sugar intake. High insulin levels inhibit testosterone production.
Eat enough healthy fats: testosterone is made from fats. Eat a lot of olive oil, avocados, fatty fish, nuts and eggs.
Enjoy the sun regularly. Vitamin D is produced under the influence of sunlight: a natural steroid that influences the life span and production of testosterone.
Symptoms testosterone insensitivity
If you do not produce enough testosterone, a number of symptoms can occur.

Infertility
Skin problems
Erectile dysfunction
Decrease in libido
Muscle weakness
Depression
Anxious
Insomnia
Decrease in muscle mass
Decrease in concentration and memory
anemia
Reduced beard growth / body hair
The healthiest and safest way is to boost your testosterone levels naturally. In the end, that’s what gives you the most satisfaction. As you have read, training and nutrition are an important part of that.

Dangerous: Testosterone for younger men

Bühmann warns against taking testosterone on your own as an anti-aging or lifestyle preparation. “Unfortunately, younger men between the ages of 20 and 30 are increasingly asking for testosterone,” says the urologist. They dreamed of a muscular body and hoped to increase their potency. In fact, however, they damaged their health.

“The excessive administration of testosterone can cause the body’s own testosterone production to drop to zero,” says Bühmann. In the worst case, this could even lead to infertility.
